If you’ve spent any amount of time hanging around the Astral Express in Honkai: Star Rail, you’ve definitely wondered about the fluffy, no-nonsense conductor that keeps the whole train running smoothly. From scolding Trailblazers for leaving trash scattered across the cabins to handing out rewards for completing trailblaze missions, Pom Pom is one of the most beloved characters in the entire game, and one of the most hotly debated when it comes to backstory. The most common question players keep asking across forums and social media is how old is pom pom honkai star rail, and the answer is way more complicated than you might expect at first glance.
Official Canon Clues About Pom Pom’s Age
HoYoverse has never given an explicit numerical age for Pom Pom, which is a big part of the character’s enduring mystery. We do have a few small clues from official character profiles and in-game dialogue that help narrow down the range, though. Pom Pom is confirmed to predate the entire current Astral Express crew, for a start. Himeko found the abandoned Astral Express as a teenager, repaired it, and reactivated its systems, and Pom Pom was already on board waiting for the train to start running again.
That means Pom Pom is at least as old as Himeko’s tenure on the train, which is roughly 10 years based on lore drops about her backstory. Some fans point to dialogue that references Pom Pom being around for earlier runs of the train before it was abandoned, though, which would put its age far higher. HoYoverse has explicitly stated that Pom Pom’s age is “a secret only Pom Pom knows”, so any number you see shared online is pure fan speculation unless it comes directly from an official release.
How Old Is Pom Pom in Honkai Star Rail: Popular Fan Theories
With no official answer available, the Honkai: Star Rail community has come up with dozens of creative theories about Pom Pom’s age and origins over the years. The most popular theory is that Pom Pom is a living manifestation of the Astral Express itself, created by the Trailblaze Aeon Akivili to run the train for all eternity. If that’s true, Pom Pom would be roughly 300 years old, matching the confirmed age of the train from lore references to Akivili’s early travels across the galaxy.
A second common theory is that Pom Pom is a type of minor Aeon or spirit that bonded with the train when it was first built, but only woke up when Himeko repaired it. That would put its active age at around 15 years old, even if its core essence is far older. A third, more lighthearted theory is that Pom Pom is just a regular, unusually mature fluffy creature that’s only 7 or 8 years old in its species’ lifespan, and the rest of the crew just lets it run the train because it’s good at the job.
A lot of fans pass the time waiting for new Honkai: Star Rail lore drops by playing casual games between story updates, especially when they’ve already cleared all the latest events and forgotten their trailblaze power has recharged. Many players who enjoy light, quick pick-up-and-play games during these short breaks use Slots Winner to pass a few minutes while they refresh forum threads for new Pom Pom lore reveals. It’s not uncommon to see fans sharing their theory drafts while waiting for their game rounds to end, so a lot of the most popular Pom Pom age ideas have been brainstormed in those casual lulls between content drops. None of these theories have been confirmed by the dev team as of now, so you can pick whichever one fits your personal headcanon until official details are released.
Why Pom Pom’s Age Is Such A Hotly Debated Topic
You might be wondering why fans care so much about the age of a fictional fluffy train conductor, especially when there are so many bigger lore mysteries in Honkai: Star Rail to unpack. There are a few key reasons the community has fixated on this specific detail for so long, and most of them tie back to how central Pom Pom is to the game’s overall vibe and story.
- Pom Pom is one of the only core Honkai: Star Rail characters that doesn’t have a playable version released yet, so fans are hungry for any details about its backstory to feel more connected to the character
- Small hints dropped in side quests and character dialogues tease that Pom Pom has a far deeper history than it lets on, which makes fans curious to learn more about what it’s hiding
- Pom Pom’s childlike appearance and mature, no-nonsense personality clash heavily, leading to a lot of confusion about what its actual age and life experience level is
There’s also a running joke in the community that Pom Pom is actually thousands of years old, and just pretends to be a fluffy little conductor to avoid doing extra work. That joke has become so popular that a lot of new fans accidentally believe it’s canonical until they look deeper into the lore and realize it’s just a bit the community has been running for years. It doesn’t help that Pom Pom often makes comments about “being around longer than you’d think” when you talk to it on the Astral Express, which only fuels the joke more.
What We Can Expect To Learn About Pom Pom In Future Updates
HoYoverse has teased multiple times that we will get more Astral Express backstory in future planet arcs, especially when we finally get to visit the origin world of the Trailblaze Aeon. There’s a very good chance we’ll get official details about Pom Pom’s origins and age in that update, but we don’t have a confirmed release date for that arc yet. Most fans estimate it will come out within the next two years, as the devs work their way through the planned story roadmap for the game.
Until then, you can find small clues hidden in character dialogues, event stories, and even item descriptions scattered across the game. Make sure to pay attention to any lines Pom Pom says about its past when you’re going through new story content, because the devs often hide small lore drops in throwaway lines that most players miss. You can also join Honkai: Star Rail community groups on social media to stay up to date on any new lore reveals or official comments about Pom Pom’s backstory as they come out.
At the end of the day, we don’t have a concrete answer to how old is pom pom honkai star rail right now, but that’s part of what makes the character so fun to follow. Whether you subscribe to the theory that Pom Pom is as old as the Astral Express itself, or you think it’s only a few years old and just has a very mature personality, you can enjoy waiting for official reveals alongside the rest of the Honkai: Star Rail community.
