If you’ve pulled Welt on a recent banner or are considering spending your Stellar Jade on his next rerun, the first question you’re probably asking is how strong is Welt Honkai Star Rail, really. As a long-time Honkai Star Rail player who’s cleared every Memory of Chaos floor and Pure Fiction stage with Welt on my main team, I can tell you he’s far more versatile than most casual players give him credit for. He’s one of the original 5-star Nihility characters released at launch, but he’s held his own even against newer limited banner units that power creep a lot of older roster members. This breakdown will walk you through exactly where he shines, where he falls short, and whether he’s worth building for your account.
How Strong Is Welt Honkai Star Rail: Core Kit Strengths
Welt’s biggest advantage over other Nihility units is that he combines reliable turn control with solid AOE Imaginary damage, so he pulls double duty as a debuffer and secondary damage dealer. His basic attack deals single-target Imaginary damage and has a small chance to slow enemies, but his real value comes from his skill, ultimate, and talent. His skill hits all enemies on the field for moderate AOE Imaginary damage and has a high chance to apply imprisonment, which stops enemies from acting for one full turn if their toughness bar is broken.
His ultimate has a 100% base chance to apply Slow to all enemies hit, reducing their speed by 30% for two full turns. His passive talent adds extra damage to every attack he makes against slowed enemies, and also reduces the defense of any enemy affected by his debuffs by 12% at base level. If you have his Eidolon 2, you also get a Imaginary damage reduction debuff applied to all enemies hit by his skill, which makes him an amazing support for any other Imaginary units on your team like Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae or Robin. I’ve run Welt with only Eidolon 0 for over a year, and even without any extra Eidolon bonuses, he still manages to shut down most elite enemy teams before they can get a second attack off.
Welt’s Performance Across Endgame PvE Content
Welt performs well across almost every endgame game mode, but there are specific stages where he’s practically a must-pick to get 3-star clears. Memory of Chaos stages with multiple fast elite enemies are where he performs best, because his slow cuts the number of enemy attacks you have to shield or heal through by almost 30% in most cases. Last season’s Memory of Chaos stage 10 had two fast Kafka elites that one-shot most of my team before I added Welt to my comp. Once I slotted him in, the elites only got one attack off each per full cycle, so I cleared the stage with 3 stars on my first try without even changing my main DPS build.
He’s also a solid pick for Pure Fiction stages, especially if you run him with a follow-up attack DPS like Jing Yuan or Topaz & Numby. His defense reduction debuff applies to all damage your team deals, so every follow-up attack gets a noticeable damage boost. For Simulated Universe runs, he pairs perfectly with the Nihility path resonance, letting you stack even more debuffs on bosses to make them barely able to move. He’s also a standout pick for event stages that have extra challenge conditions related to turn order or debuff application, since he checks both boxes without needing extra support.
Best Builds to Maximize Welt’s Strength
To get the most out of Welt, you don't need to chase perfect 5-star relics, but there are a few core choices that will make his performance jump significantly. A lot of new players make the mistake of building him like a pure DPS, but his utility is far more valuable than his personal damage output for 90% of accounts. The right build will let him land his debuffs consistently while still dealing enough secondary damage to help clear waves of smaller enemies quickly.
- Relic set: 4-piece Genius of Brilliant Stars for general use, as it boosts his Imaginary damage and ignores 10% of enemy defense when attacking targets with Imaginary weakness. If you want to prioritize turn speed for your entire team, 4-piece Messenger Traversing Hackerspace is a great alternative that gives your whole team a speed boost when Welt uses his ultimate.
- Best light cones: In the Name of the World (his signature 5-star) is best, as it boosts his effect hit rate and increases damage dealt to debuffed enemies. For F2P players, Before the Tutorial Mission Starts is a great 4-star option that boosts his effect hit rate and gives him extra energy when he attacks slowed enemies. Eyes of the Prey is another solid 4-star pick if you want to extend the duration of his debuffs.
- Top stats to prioritize: Effect Hit Rate (minimum 60% to land all debuffs on non-boss enemies, 80% if you plan to use him against endgame bosses), Speed (134+ to make sure he acts before most enemies), Imaginary Damage Bonus on the chest piece, then ATK% for extra damage output. You should also use an Energy Recharge rope if you find he can’t cast his ultimate often enough.
Don't stress if you don't have perfect substats for his relics. As long as you hit that 60% effect hit rate threshold, he’ll still work perfectly for most casual content. If you’re only using him for his utility and don’t care about his personal damage, you can even run him with HP% main stats to make him tankier, so you don't have to waste healer turns keeping him alive.
Welt’s Limitations and Who Should Avoid Building Him
Welt is a great unit for most accounts, but he’s not the right pick for everyone. First off, he can’t carry a team on his own, so if you don't already have a built main DPS, you should prioritize leveling your damage dealer before you invest resources into Welt. He also requires a fair amount of effect hit rate to work properly, so if you don't have the relics to hit that 60% threshold, he’ll feel very weak because his slows and imprisonment will miss constantly.
F2P players with limited resources should also hold off on building Welt if they already have other built Nihility units like Silver Wolf or Kafka. Silver Wolf brings weakness implant and defense reduction that offers more team-wide utility for most comps, and Kafka is a main DPS that doesn't overlap with Welt’s role but will take priority for resources if you have her. Welt also underperforms in stages where enemies are immune to slow, though these stages are fairly rare and usually have clear workarounds if you still want to use him.
Another small downside is that his ultimate has a fairly high energy cost of 120, so you’ll need to run him with an energy recharge rope or pair him with a support like Tingyun or Bronya to make sure he can cast his ultimate every two turns. If you don't have a way to boost his energy gain, you’ll find he can’t apply his slow consistently enough to be worth a team slot.
At the end of the day, how strong is Welt Honkai Star Rail depends entirely on your account roster and what content you're trying to clear. For players who struggle with fast, high damage enemies in endgame PvE, he's one of the best utility units you can add to your team, and he'll stay relevant for years even as new characters are released. If you already pulled him, he's absolutely worth investing in, even if you don't have his signature light cone or high Eidolons. If you're on the fence about pulling him, just think about whether you need a reliable AOE debuffer that can also deal solid Imaginary damage, and go from there.
