If you’ve ever hit a wall on a Forgotten Hall floor, gotten one-shot by a Simulated Universe boss, or spent 20 minutes retrying a main story boss fight with no progress, you’re far from alone. A lot of new players assume Honkai: Star Rail is only for hardcore grinders who spend hours farming perfect relics every day, but that’s not the case at all. You can easily learn how to lower difficulty in Honkai: Star Rail without skipping out on Stellar Jade, rare upgrade materials, or story content, even if you only play 30 minutes a day. Most of these tweaks take less than 10 minutes to implement, and you don’t have to spend a penny to make them work.
Tweak Built-In Game Settings to Reduce Friction Fast
The first place to start is with the game’s own built-in accessibility and difficulty toggles, most of which players don’t even know exist until they’ve been stuck for hours. You don’t have to play every fight on manual to get full rewards, and the devs have added multiple systems to help players who are struggling with content gaps.
First, turn on Auto-Battle with 2x Speed for all non-boss fights if you haven’t already. The auto-AI is surprisingly competent for most regular content, and running fights at double speed cuts down on the time you spend grinding by half. You can even turn on auto-skill use to skip manually selecting attacks every turn, as long as you have a healer or shielder on your team to keep units alive.
Next, don’t sleep on the Simulated Universe World Difficulty Slider. A lot of players force themselves to run the highest possible difficulty they unlocked just because it’s there, but lower difficulty worlds drop almost all the same trace materials and light cones as higher ones, just in slightly smaller quantities. If you can’t clear Difficulty 3 without dying 3 times, run Difficulty 2 for a week while you power up your team. You’ll still get all the weekly bonus rewards, and you won’t waste 2 hours on failed runs.
There’s also the hidden Stage Retry Difficulty Reduction Buff that triggers if you fail a story or Calyx fight 3 times in a row. It gives you a 20% damage boost and 20% damage resistance for all future attempts at that stage, and it stacks up to 3 times if you keep failing. You don’t have to do anything to unlock it, it activates automatically, and you still get full rewards for beating the stage with the buff active.
Core Methods to Lower Difficulty in Honkai: Star Rail Before You Grind More
If adjusting settings still isn’t enough, you don’t have to jump straight into 10 hours of relic farming. Small tweaks to your team build and loadout can cut fight difficulty in half overnight, even if you’re only using free 3 and 4-star units.
The biggest mistake new players make is prioritizing character rarity over type advantage priority. A level 50 4-star DPS that matches the enemy’s weakness will do 3x more damage than a level 60 5-star DPS that doesn’t, no matter how good their relics are. Before every tough fight, check the enemy’s weakness types in the top right corner of the pre-fight screen, and swap in units that match those types first. I’ve cleared multiple Forgotten Hall floors with a full free-to-play team of 4-stars just by swapping out a mismatched 5-star for a lower-level unit that hit the boss’s weakness.
You also don’t need to level every trace on your units to make them strong. For most DPS units, you only need to level their basic attack, skill, and ultimate to max level. Their talent and bonus traces can wait until you have extra materials to spare. For healers and shielders, you only need to level their skill and ultimate, since their basic attack barely does any damage anyway. This cuts the number of trace materials you need to farm by 40% for most units.
Light cone selection is another easy win. A level 60 4-star light cone that matches your unit’s path will always perform better than a level 60 5-star light cone for a different path. For example, a level 60 “Post-Op Conversation” on Natasha will give her way more healing than a level 60 5-star Erudition light cone, even if the 5-star has higher base stats. Most of the best 4-star light cones are available for free from the Forgotten Hall shop or Simulated Universe Herta shop, so you don’t have to pull on light cone banners to get them.
Optimize Your Progression Path to Avoid Unnecessary Difficulty Spikes
A lot of difficulty spikes are completely avoidable if you don’t rush through the game’s main story as fast as possible. New players often grind main story quests nonstop to unlock more content, hit Trailblaze Level 40, and then realize all enemies are suddenly 20 levels higher than their team, with no way to beat them without grinding for days.
The fix is simple: pause main story progression every 10 Trailblaze Levels to spend a few days powering up your main team. When you hit TB 20, take 2 days to level your main units to level 40, upgrade their light cones, and unlock their core traces before you keep playing the main story. Do the same at TB 30, 40, and 50, and you’ll never hit a difficulty wall that takes more than a day to get past.
You also don’t have to grind every material from scratch. The game gives you tons of free resources from low-effort activities that you’re probably skipping right now. These activities give you more than enough materials to level your main team without spending all your stamina on Calyx runs:
- Claim daily assignment rewards for free character XP and credits, no stamina required. You can send units on 8-hour assignments while you’re at work or sleeping, and they’ll come back with enough XP to level a unit from 1 to 20 in one go.
- Run 2-3 Simulated Universe runs a week for free relics, light cones, and upgrade materials. Even if you only run the lowest difficulty, you’ll get enough weekly bonus rewards to level 2-3 traces for your main units every week.
- Complete the first 3 stages of weekly Forgotten Hall for guaranteed Stellar Jade and trace materials, even if you can’t beat the higher floors. These stages are designed for new players, and you can beat them with a level 50 free team with no problem.
- Use the Omni-Synthesizer to convert unused low-tier materials into the ones you need, instead of farming them from scratch. You can convert 5 low-tier trace materials into 1 high-tier one of the same type, which saves you hours of farming Calyxes.
If you’re stuck on a single story boss, you can also use a friend’s support unit to carry you through the fight for free. Most long-time players have a fully built 5-star DPS on their support list that can one-shot most early to mid-game bosses. Just add a few active players from the in-game friend search, and you’ll have access to a max level carry unit whenever you need it. I’ve had friends who quit the game for a month after getting stuck on the Cocolia boss fight, only to come back and beat it in one try using a friend’s level 70 Jing Yuan support.
Common Mistakes That Make Gameplay Harder Than It Needs To Be
A lot of the difficulty players face is self-inflicted, from bad habits they picked up when they first started playing. Fixing these small mistakes will make fights feel way easier, even if you don’t change anything else about your playstyle.
The most common mistake is trying to build every character you pull. New players get excited when they pull a new 4-star character, waste all their XP materials and credits leveling them to 50, and then their main team is still stuck at level 40, too weak to beat any content. You only need to build 4-5 units for your main team for the first 50 hours of the game. You can level other units later when you have extra resources to spare.
Another mistake is running all-DPS teams with no healer or shielder. A lot of new players think healers are a waste of a slot that could be used for another damage unit, but a single healer or shielder cuts fight difficulty by 50% easily. You’ll spend way less time reviving dead units and restarting fights, and you’ll be able to take on bosses that one-shot all-DPS teams without breaking a sweat. Even a level 50 Natasha or March 7th is enough to keep your team alive through 90% of early and mid-game content.
Don’t sleep on combat techniques either. Techniques are the abilities you can use outside of combat to get a buff before a fight starts, and they’re completely free to use, as long as you pick up the technique points scattered around every map. Using Natasha’s technique to heal your whole team before a boss fight, or Dan Heng’s technique to get a 40% attack boost for the first 3 turns, can make a tough fight feel trivial. Most players only use techniques once every 10 fights, but you can use them before every boss fight with no downsides.
Finally, stop wasting stamina farming perfect relic set bonuses before Trailblaze Level 50. 4-star relics that drop before TB 50 are temporary, and you’ll replace them all with 5-star relics once you hit TB 50 anyway. A 2-piece attack set and 2-piece random set on your DPS works perfectly fine for all content before TB 50, so don’t spend 10 hours farming for a perfect 4-piece set that you’ll throw away in a week.
At the end of the day, Honkai: Star Rail is meant to be fun first, not a second job you have to grind to keep up with. You don’t need perfect relics, limited 5-star characters, or hours of free time every day to beat all the game’s core content. All these small tweaks add up fast, and learning how to lower difficulty in Honkai: Star Rail is all about working with the game’s systems, not against them. Once you stop forcing yourself to play the “right” way that streamers tell you to, you can focus on enjoying the story, characters, and casual gameplay that makes the game so popular in the first place.
